About Via Lactea
Via Lactea (Latin for "Milky Way") is a black granite with bright white veins and flecks scattered across the slab. The name fits: it looks like a night sky, with streaks of white crossing a deep charcoal field.
It is a strong choice for a high-contrast kitchen with white or light wood cabinetry, and a durable pick for bars, islands and outdoor kitchens. The white veining keeps it from reading as a flat black, and it hides crumbs well.

What is granite?
Granite is one of the most popular materials due to its versatility, durability, and ease of maintenance. It can also be more affordable than other options. Granite comes in a striking array of colors and is an ideal choice for kitchen and bathroom countertops, outdoor projects, business applications, and other heavily used surfaces.
Via Lactea questions we get asked
Does Via Lactea show water spots?
In a polished finish, a black granite shows water spots and smudges more than a light stone. The white veining helps, and a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth handles it. A leathered finish hides marks better if one is in stock.
Is Via Lactea a granite or a marble?
It is sold as a granite. It is dense and heat tolerant, so it handles everyday cooking far better than a marble would.
Does Via Lactea need to be sealed?
Most granite benefits from a sealer, and we seal at install. Dark, dense granites absorb very little, so resealing is infrequent; the water-drop test once a year tells you if it is needed.
Can I put a hot pan on Via Lactea?
Granite is one of the most heat-tolerant countertop materials, so an occasional hot pan will not hurt it. We still suggest a trivet as a habit to protect the sealer and the seams.
Can Via Lactea be used outdoors?
Yes. Granite is UV stable and weathers well, which is why it is a favorite for outdoor kitchens and grill surrounds around Charlotte.
